Triplex Pump Charge System: Define the Supplier Scope

The feed arrangement belongs in the purchase review. A charge-pump flow figure alone does not establish acceptable conditions at the triplex inlet.

Identify the required inlet conditions

Request the triplex supplier requirements for the selected liquid, temperature, speed and delivered flow. Clarify where inlet pressure is defined and which operating cases must be covered. A steady reading at a distant tank or charge-pump discharge does not describe the conditions at the reciprocating pump connection. The accepted design should account for the actual piping and cyclic demand rather than relying only on a nominal pressure label.

Describe the supply source and feed path

Provide a layout showing tank levels, liquid temperature, elevation changes, piping lengths, fittings, strainers and valves. Identify minimum source level and the longest or most restrictive feed path. Include parallel consumers where they share the supply. Ask the responsible designer to review losses and acceleration effects for the installed arrangement, with assumptions stated clearly enough that a later piping change can be assessed before it is accepted.

Select the charge equipment as part of the system

If a charge pump is required, specify its operating cases, liquid compatibility and available driver utilities. Review the offered curve and control method against the full feed path. Check both insufficient supply and excessive inlet pressure at different triplex operating states. More charge pressure is not automatically an improvement, and a pump sized for one speed or tank condition may not be appropriate across the required operating range.

Include filters, instrumentation and response logic

Agree filtration requirements without selecting a finer element simply because it appears more protective. Review the clean and expected dirty pressure losses, access and maintenance arrangements. Locate instruments so they support evaluation of conditions at the triplex inlet. Ask for alarm and shutdown requirements from the responsible suppliers and designers; a sensor in the wrong location may show satisfactory supply while a restriction close to the pump remains undetected.

Close the boundary between vendors

Identify who selects the charge pump, sizes the feed piping, reviews inlet pulsation and approves the final layout. Require coordination between the triplex supplier and package integrator where their scopes differ. Agree commissioning measurements and acceptance criteria before manufacture. A quotation excluding suction design should not be treated as a complete feed-system proposal, even when a charge pump and several inlet accessories are listed as included.

Preserve design assumptions through installation

Record the accepted tank levels, liquid properties, piping geometry, filters and operating speeds with the feed-system review. If site installation changes any of those inputs, obtain a reassessment rather than assuming the earlier approval still applies. During acceptance, compare the installed arrangement with the approved documents and collect the agreed measurements. Keep operating and maintenance instructions with the package so filter replacement, valve positioning and later modifications do not silently invalidate the selected inlet conditions.

Suggested wording for the quotation request

Please quote and define the charge-system scope for the selected triplex pump. Review the attached liquid data, tank levels and feed layout for all operating speeds. Identify the charge pump, filters, valves, instruments and any inlet pulsation provisions. State acceptable triplex inlet conditions, control and protective requirements, design responsibility, installation limits and the measurements required to demonstrate the agreed feed conditions at commissioning.

Evaluate the offered pump within its complete operating system: feed supply, pressure piping, prime mover, lubrication, controls and maintenance access. Record the liquid properties, simultaneous pressure and flow points, speed range and expected running hours. Keep the accepted limits and supporting drawings with the purchase order. A bare-pump rating does not establish the capability of the installed package or every possible fluid. Qualified personnel must follow the supplied instructions and approved site procedures for installation, testing and service.

Buyer questions

Is charge-pump capacity enough to approve the inlet?

No. Liquid conditions, piping losses, cyclic demand, source levels and the triplex inlet limits must also be reviewed.

Can the purchaser change the feed piping later?

Changes should be reviewed against the accepted inlet design before installation or operation, particularly when they alter length, restrictions or elevation.

Background and supplier contact

Reciprocating-pump reference documents offers related background, not certification of the equipment in a quotation. Applicability must be checked for the project and destination.
