Provide site power and operating requirements
State the available voltage, frequency, supply arrangement and any project electrical standards. Attach simultaneous pressure-flow cases with running duration, starting frequency and the required low-speed operation. Ask for the selected pump and motor combination, including transmission where used. The driver should be reviewed against the accepted mechanical demand rather than chosen by matching a motor nameplate to a catalogue pump power number.
Review the supported speed and torque range
Ask for the pump speed limits and the drive capability throughout the required range. Identify how lubrication, cooling and other auxiliary equipment operate when the main drive slows or stops. A variable-frequency drive can change speed, but it does not remove the pump and motor constraints at every operating point. Obtain a coordinated selection showing the permitted modes rather than assuming full pressure and continuous service at any commanded speed.
Define electrical enclosure and environmental scope
Provide ambient conditions, dust, moisture and the approved hazardous-area classification where applicable. Ask the responsible electrical designer to review the motor, drive panel, local instruments and cable interfaces against those requirements. A certificate for one component does not establish suitability of the whole installation. Request the actual offered equipment references and applicable documents; do not accept a generic explosion-proof description without identifying the covered parts and conditions.
Agree controls and protective interfaces
Identify local and remote operation, process setpoints, alarms, trips and communication interfaces. State the boundary between the pump package, site control system and electrical supply. Ask who provides the control narrative and verifies the required responses. Pressure protection and emergency functions need a coordinated design; neither a speed-control command nor a motor protection function should be assumed to satisfy every pump-system protective requirement.
Specify integrated testing and documentation
Request checks covering the assembled drive, pump auxiliaries and controls within the supplier scope. Agree which electrical, functional and performance evidence will be supplied and which commissioning work remains at site. Include motor, drive and panel documentation, settings records and interface drawings. Where test power differs from site conditions, ask how the acceptance evidence applies to the actual installation rather than treating all factory running as an equivalent demonstration.
Evaluate the electrical package at one boundary
Compare quotations with identical site data, operating cases and control responsibilities. List included cooling, auxiliary power, cabling, panels and field devices separately. Identify any site studies or engineering work excluded from the offer and assign responsibility before purchase. Keep the accepted speed range and operating modes visible in the handover documents so later changes to control settings are reviewed against both the pump and drive limits, not only the process demand.
Put these items side by side in the bid review
| Purchase item | Question to resolve | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Power | Which site supply is assumed? | Electrical design inputs |
| Range | What duty is supported at each speed? | Coordinated drive selection |
| Controls | Who verifies the protective responses? | Control narrative and test plan |
Suggested wording for the quotation request
Please quote an electric triplex pump package for the attached duty and site power data. Identify the motor, VFD, transmission, auxiliary systems and supported speed range. Confirm environmental and project electrical requirements, local and remote interfaces, protective-function responsibilities and included panels and cabling. Provide coordinated selection evidence, interface drawings, integrated test scope and the site commissioning work required to accept the installation.
Evaluate the offered pump within its complete operating system: feed supply, pressure piping, prime mover, lubrication, controls and maintenance access. Record the liquid properties, simultaneous pressure and flow points, speed range and expected running hours. Keep the accepted limits and supporting drawings with the purchase order. A bare-pump rating does not establish the capability of the installed package or every possible fluid. Qualified personnel must follow the supplied instructions and approved site procedures for installation, testing and service.
For the wider equipment scope, consult the Oilfield Triplex Plunger Pump: Configuration Guide. Use the RFQ checklist to collect the supporting documents before requesting a configuration-specific quotation.
Buyer questions
Does a VFD allow unrestricted low-speed operation?
No. Pump lubrication, motor cooling, torque capability and auxiliary operation must be reviewed across the accepted range.
Does a certified motor make the entire package suitable for a hazardous area?
No. The complete supplied arrangement and installed interfaces require review against the actual classification and project requirements.
Background and supplier contact
OSHA oil and gas extraction guidance offers related background, not certification of the equipment in a quotation. Applicability must be checked for the project and destination.
