State the continuous operating cases
Describe the required flow against normal and maximum injection backpressure, the daily running hours and expected seasonal variation. Include low-demand operation, periods of higher pressure and planned stops. Ask the supplier to confirm the permitted duty for the selected frame and complete package. A power figure stated for intermittent service does not establish thermal balance, bearing duty or support-system capability over an extended operating period.
Provide the injection liquid analysis
Submit the water or process-fluid composition, temperature range, solids and any treatment chemicals. Include expected changes during operation and identify uncertain values for follow-up. Ask the supplier to confirm wetted materials, packing, valves and compatibility limits. Produced water, treated water and chemical solutions should not be treated as interchangeable duties merely because the required pressure and flow are similar on a preliminary equipment list.
Review the complete inlet arrangement
Show tank levels, feed piping, filters, valves and any charge pump. State the available inlet pressure at the pump connection during the highest demanded flow, not only the pressure at a remote supply point. Request review of pulsation and acceleration effects by the responsible designer. Continuous service can expose small feed deficiencies repeatedly, so the accepted inlet conditions and monitoring requirements should be documented before the pump is purchased.
Resolve low-flow and temperature behavior
Explain how the process will reduce demand and ask for the supported control strategy. Review minimum permitted speed, lubrication requirements, recirculation paths and heat removal at low delivery rates. Do not assume that slowing the drive or returning liquid to a small tank is suitable for every configuration. Confirm operating limits and protective functions in the supplier documents rather than improvising a control method during commissioning.
Plan maintenance without assuming uninterrupted availability
Ask for service access, wear-part replacement requirements and proposed condition checks for the actual liquid. Where injection cannot stop, review standby capacity and isolation with the system designer. A spare pump is useful only if switching, utilities and maintenance access are also addressed. Agree the spare-parts list and support scope; neither a general continuous-duty description nor a catalogue efficiency figure guarantees a particular service interval.
Compare complete operating arrangements
For competing injection proposals, use the same fluid analysis, duty schedule, ambient range and utility conditions. Compare driver demand, cooling and lubrication equipment, feed-system requirements and maintenance access at that common boundary. Record how each supplier addresses normal operation, low flow, standby and restart. Ask for a statement of supported continuous service for the offered configuration and keep it separate from any higher short-term capability presented elsewhere in the quotation.
Put these items side by side in the bid review
| Purchase item | Question to resolve | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Duty | Is continuous running explicitly supported? | Accepted operating schedule |
| Turndown | What limits apply at low flow? | Control narrative and limits |
| Availability | How is service performed? | Isolation and standby plan |
Suggested wording for the quotation request
Please select a triplex plunger pump for the attached continuous injection duty and liquid analysis. Confirm the supported pressure-flow range, running hours, minimum speed and accepted inlet conditions. Identify lubrication, cooling, feed supply and protective functions. Describe low-demand operation, maintenance access and any standby interfaces. State limitations for the selected configuration and distinguish continuous ratings from intermittent or short-duration operating capabilities.
Evaluate the offered pump within its complete operating system: feed supply, pressure piping, prime mover, lubrication, controls and maintenance access. Record the liquid properties, simultaneous pressure and flow points, speed range and expected running hours. Keep the accepted limits and supporting drawings with the purchase order. A bare-pump rating does not establish the capability of the installed package or every possible fluid. Qualified personnel must follow the supplied instructions and approved site procedures for installation, testing and service.

Buyer questions
Can a well-service pump automatically be used continuously?
No. The supplier must review the actual configuration, operating duration, liquid, speed, thermal duty and support systems.
Should standby equipment be included?
Base that decision on process availability requirements and the maintenance strategy, including isolation, switching and shared utilities.
Background and supplier contact
Reciprocating-pump reference documents offers related background, not certification of the equipment in a quotation. Applicability must be checked for the project and destination.
